Dear Parent or Guardian:
As your student moves through his/her senior year, it is important that
he/she stays focused and makes the most of this very important school
year. The purpose of this
letter is to clarify high school graduation requirements for seniors.
In order to earn a diploma,
and participate in the graduation ceremony, all
students must meet all state and local requirements. Students must: earn a
minimum of 220 credits, pass all required classes, including Algebra,
demonstrate computer proficiency by successfully completing Intermediate
Computers in middle school, Computer Applications I in high school or
passing the Computer Proficiency Exam, complete 40 Service Learning hours,
and pass both sections of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).
The primary purpose of the CAHSEE, which is mandated by state law, is to
ensure that students who graduate from high school can demonstrate
competency in the state’s academic content standards for reading,
writing, and mathematics. The
CAHSEE is divided into two parts: (1)
English-Language arts, which includes reading and writing and (2)
mathematics. Students who do
not pass both sections of the exit exam by June, 2009, will not receive a high school diploma
and will not be able to participate in the graduation ceremony.
The California High School Exit Exam will
be administered to seniors, who have not yet passed, on November 4 and 5,
2008. In order to be fully
prepared for the November exam, it is important that your senior take
advantage of curricular and supplemental instruction opportunities offered
at his/her high school.
Parents and students are encouraged to meet
with their teachers and counselor to secure successful completion of high
school.
For further
information regarding your senior’s graduation status, about the
California High School Exit Exam, participation in CAHSEE review,
curricular and supplemental instruction opportunities, and completion of
the service learning requirement, contact your high school office during
regular school hours.
Sincerely,
Maggie
